Facebook has started rolling out a host of new messaging features for Instagram and Messenger users. These include vanish mode, selfie stickers, custom emoji reactions, animated message effects, message controls, chat themes and more. The social media company has also introduced the Watch Together feature which allows users to watch IGTV, Reels, TV shows, movies and trending videos in real-time over video chat.
Users can tap the media button in the bottom right and choose TV & Movies in Instagram video chat to use the feature. In a Messenger video chat, swipe up to access the menu, select Watch Together then select the ‘TV & Movies’ tab.
The second feature rolled out is chat themes such as tie-dye and love that enables users to personalize conversations. Vanish mode, on the other hand, is an opt-in feature which makes seen messages disappear after one leaves a chat thread. “Now you can send memes, GIFs or reactions to share what you really think but can’t always say, without it staying in your chat history,” said the company in a blog post. To turn the feature on, one needs to simply swipe up in an existing chat thread. Swiping up again will bring back the regular chat.
The feature is completely optional and can be used for one-on-one chats. Facebook says that if someone takes a screenshot of a user’s chat while he/she is using vanish mode, the user will be notified. Vanish mode is now available on Messenger in the US and a handful of other countries. It will soon be rolled out to other countries in the EU.
